Vuelta Stage 11: Froome wins stage just ahead of Quintana

The race boiled down to the two best riders this Vuelta on the super-steep climb of Peña Cabarga

A few breakaways were brought back until 23 riders managed to force a tiny gap. It proved to be the lucky break as Ben Hermans, Martijn Keizer, Davide Malacarne, Koen de Kort, Johannes Frölingher, Kiel Reijnen, Jan Bakelants, Axel Domont, Tiago Machado, Jhonatan Restrepo, Sander Armée, Pieter Serry, Zdenek Stybar, Pierre Rolland, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Merhawi Kudus, Larry Warbasse, Kristijan Durasek, Iliya Koshevoy, Cesare Benedetti, Christoph Pfingsten, David Arrroyo and Angel Madrazo race to a maximum lead at more than 5 minutes.

Movistart and Tinkoff start to reel the breakaway back.

When the Peloton hits the final climb the breakaway is near enough caught, except Hermans, the last survivor. He's swallowed up by the thinning Peloton with 3 kms remaining.

Esteban Chaves goes on the attack with 1.8 kms to go and Sky's Leopold König was next to counter attack.

Red jersey and race leader Nairo Quintana went on the offensive with less than 1km to go.

Froome chased down Quintana and then counter attacked, wining the stage just ahead of Quintana, to gain a bonus of 10 seconds - putting him just under a minute behind Quintana's Red Jersey.

Froome today showed Quintana that he means business - although 54 seconds is a big gap to close.
