Olympic BMX cyclist in a coma after terrible crash

Jelle van Gorkom, Olympic BMX silver medalist in Rio, suffered an terrible accident while training in Holland

Announced by the Dutch Federation. Jelle van Gorkom, aged 27, lost control of the bicycle after the first of his jumps, at the national center of Papendal in Holland.

He was immediately transferred to hospital and has several broken ribs, a fracture in the face and skull and damage to the liver, spleen and kidneys. 

"At the moment he is in a coma", explained the Dutch Federation,  "It was a terrible accident", acknowledged the director of the sports center of Papendal, Jochem Schellens. "Our thoughts are with Jelle, his girlfriend, and the rest of the family, we wish them all the strength for the next few hours," he added.
