Edwards and Aitken fastest at 2023 Gran Fondo Moab
350 riders enjoyed one of Utah’s top Italian Cycling Traditions in the American Southwest
You couldn’t have asked for a better day for the Gran Fondo Moab, it was an amazing day with so many smiling faces crossing the finish line!
The Gran Fondo Moab follows the La Sal Mountain Loop Road with 60 miles with 5,500 feet of climbing and is one the most beautiful routes you can ride in any cycling event in the United States.
The route through La Sals provided incredible views of the 12,000+ foot peaks and the red rock valleys far below. Finishing this gorgeous loop will take you back to Moab via Spanish Valley Drive.
The route includes some tough climbing, with some very steep switchbacks, climbing 7 miles to 8,300 feet to the Castle Valley Overlook. Riders were rewarded with 22 miles downhill to the finish, with some tight switchbacks which required some careful descending, looking for wildlife, potholes and loose gravel too.
In the men's race, Derek Edwards from Layton was fastest in a time of 2h 47m ahead of Butch Peterson and Broox Pulford both from CO who were 7 minutes behind.
In the women's race, Melissa Aitken from Salt Lake City was fastest in a time 3h 14m ahead of Sarah Matchett from CO 5 mins behind and Kristy Amer from CO 19 mins behind.
The first male and female riders won $100.00 in cash!
Out on course riders benefited from Fully stocked aid stations w/food, water & electrolyte, SAG Wagon & Mechanical support and Accurate timing with overall & age category results.
Riders received an event T-Shirt and catered lunch at the finish line!
