Olav Kooij wins opening sprint stage at Paris-Nice

Kooij outsprinted Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) in second and Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) in third.

In the GC battle between the big contenders Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe), Evenepoel picked up four bonus seconds after attacking at the intermediate sprint, those points may come in handy in the later stages.

Roglic who was at the back of the peloton, woke up to the attack and came to the front to make his presence known. Evenepoel attacked again and Roglic covered his move. The attack split the peloton up, with several groups desperately trying to get back on behind.

Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) decided to attack with 10 km to go and got a good gap, but alas the sprinters teams reeled him back in with 2km to go. The run in was technical with roundabouts and tight corners hampering the sprinters teams getting their fastmen near the front.

Tomorrow's second stage to Montargis is 177.6 km which is fairly flat, with one internediate sprint, another day for the sprinters and their teams.
