A tragic incident marred the Etape Loch Ness cycling event on Sunday, April 27, 2025, when a 49-year-old male participant succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision with a vehicle

The event, which attracted 6,100 riders to the scenic 66-mile route around the iconic Loch Ness,. The etape is Scotland's largest closed-road long distance organised cycling event in terms of participants.

Malcolm Sutherland, the event organizer, expressed profound sorrow in an official statement released on social media. “It is with great sadness that we confirm a fatality occurred during yesterday’s Etape Loch Ness event. A 49-year-old man was involved in a collision with a vehicle next to the event area in Inverness shortly after midday. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from emergency services, he sadly died later in hospital,” Sutherland stated.

Reports indicate that the crash involved a BMW 120 M Sport driven by a male. While specific details surrounding the incident remain unclear, Police Scotland has launched an investigation and is appealing to witnesses to come forward with any information that may assist in their inquiries.

An area of Island Bank Road, in Inverness, was cordoned off after the crash.

Police Scotland Sergeant Lewis Macleod said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Wilson’s family and friends at this difficult time. Our inquiries into the crash are ongoing and we ask anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn’t spoken to police to come forward.”

This tragic accident marks the fourth cyclist fatality in April alone, following two deaths at the renowned Tour of Flanders and one during the Mallorca 312 event. The cycling community is mourning these losses, highlighting the inherent risks that cyclists face, even in organized and well-regulated events.

The Etape Loch Ness has long been celebrated for its stunning scenery and commitment to providing a safe, enjoyable experience for riders. With traffic-free roads and a supportive atmosphere, the event has become a staple for cycling enthusiasts both locally and internationally.
