Killian Jornet to summit 72 14,000 feet climbs in Western US by Bike

Kilian Jornet stands as one of the most accomplished and versatile mountain athletes of the modern era and attempts of a new epic challenge on the bike across the Western side of USA.

States of Elevation: Killian Jornet's New 14ers Project

Jornet’s New States of Elevation (14ers Porject) will join his previous exploits including Alpine Connections on the bike (linking all 82 4000m Climbs in the Alps to his legendary climbs of Everest, Aconcagua, Mont Blanc, Matterhorn and Kilimanjaro ascents.

Jornet’s goal is to summit as many US fourteeners (14,000-ft or 4,267m) peaks in a continuous, human-powered journey (cycling transitions and running/climbing summits) across Colorado, California, and Washington, starting at Longs Peak, CO and ending at Mount Rainier, WA.Jornet will travel the entire distance between each mountain by bicycle.

The United States has 96 peaks over 14,000 feet. The state of Colorado alone has 53, followed by California and Washington. It should be noted that Kilian Jornet will not be venturing into Alaska, where the last fourteeners on the list of 96 are located.

In total, this means 25 fewer fourteeners, for a total of 71. The total distance is difficult to estimate. But starting from Longs Peak in northern Colorado, Jornet will tackle most of the fourteeners right away.

This is equivalent to a Tour de France mountain stage on the bike plus a marathon on foot (often with technical rock/snow/ice) each day — all at an average elevation above 3,000 m, often exceeding 4,200 m during summit pushes.

He aims to complete this endeavour by bike in about a month.
