The Tour de France Grand Départ in Denmark in the summer of 2022 was a major success! The Tour de France isn’t finished with Denmark just yet, now Danish and international amateur cyclists have the opportunity to experience what its like to ride like a pro in the Tour de France on Danish soil!
This year, Denmark’s biggest annually occurring cycling event Hærvejsløbet – The Viking Gran Fondo together with the municipality of Viborg reached an agreement with the Tour de France organizers A.S.O. about a Danish edition in the L’Etape by Tour de France series.
The 1st official edition of the L’Etape Denmark by Tour de France was held in 2023. The event was a huge success with more than 2,500 riders taking part and experiencing the authentic Tour de France atmosphere.
Now you have the chance, when the race returns on June 29th 2024!

Challenge your inner Viking!
L’Etape Denmark by Tour de France features five challenging and beautiful routes ranging from 50 km all the way up to 300 km. All routes follow a natural ridge that was formed through the Danish mainland during the last ice age. This ancient road has over the centuries helped migrants, pilgrims, merchants and Vikings stay dry as they made their way through Denmark.
You’ll need to bring out your “Inner Viking” to overcome the challenging routes and the steep climbs. You’ll pass within touching distance of King Harald Bluetooth’s famous rune stone, you can almost imagine Viking horns growing out of your cycle helmet!
While the hardships of this demanding Gran Fondo will definitely put you to the test, the route also offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the ride. With seven places to stop along the way, you roll through one of the feed stations organized by local volunteers, famous not only for their great food but also for their great vibes and accommodating atmosphere.
Le Tour atmosphere in Denmark!
The L’Etape by Tour de France series guarantees that participants will get a taste of what it feels like to ride the Tour de France. This includes a number of timed QOM/ KOM and Sprint sections, just like the Tour! This is your opportunity to compete for the iconic Leader’s jerseys. The yellow jersey is up for grabs as well as the Green sprinters jersey and the climbers Polka Dot jersey too!

The finish line in the city of Viborg will be clad in yellow and built just like a “Tour Village”, just like a real Tour de France host city.

It will also feature a Tour de France museum with vintage items and lots interesting facts about the race over the last 110 editions since 1903.

In 2023, the iconic Didi the Devil attended the start of two routes and was present at a KOM and at the finish line too, giving the event true “Tour de France Feels”. A yet undisclosed, famous star in the cycling community will also be present in June 2024.

Big expectations from Le Tour director
Expectations for the L’Etape Denmark by Tour de France were great from the Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme before this year’s 1st edition.
“ASO, the Tour de France organizers are very happy to have L’Etape by Tour de France series coming to Denmark. After the amazing success of the Tour de France Grand Départ in the country, it looked like an evidence for us to have an L’Etape by Tour de France event on Danish roads.”
“With the unique craze along the roads and the amazing performances from Danish riders in the last Tour de France editions, especially this year with 4 stage victories won by the local riders & the yellow and polka dot jerseys won by Jonas Vingegaard, I’m sure the event will be a great success and that Danish and international riders will live the true Tour de France experience in Viborg on June 24th, 2023, competing on nice roads for the Tour de France jerseys and enjoying the best possible experience for cycling amateurs,” stated Christian Prudhomme.

About Hærvejsløbet – The Viking Gran Fondo
Hærvejsløbet – The Viking Gran Fondo is Denmark’s biggest annually occurring cycling event!
The road courses will host the L’Etape Denmark by Tour de France event. In 2023 nearly 6,000 cyclists took part on 11 different routes.
The event is organized by Danish sports organization DGI in collaboration with 25 local clubs and associations and more than 900 volunteers.
It’s possible to participate in Hærvejsløbet – The Viking Gran Fondo on a road bike, mountain bike and gravel bike, the road courses are now part of the L’Etape Series concept.
All routes follow the ancient road Hærvejen from north or south towards the finishing city of Viborg. Hærvejen follows the natural ridge through Jutland that was formed during the last ice age and has, over the centuries, helped migrants, pilgrims, merchants and Vikings stay dry as they made their way through Denmark.
