France to Become the World Capital of Cycling in 2027

The UCI and the local organizing committee of the second edition of the UCI Cycling World Championships have today unveiled the details of the event, which will take place in the French department of Haute-Savoie from August 24 to September 5, 2027

France to Become the World Capital of Cycling in 2027

The information was revealed during a press conference in Sallanches, France.

The event will bring together 20 UCI World Championships in 12 sites, with approximately 10,000 athletes (Elite and Amateur) representing over 130 nations competing for 13 days for the 281 UCI World Champion titles at stake. It is expected that around two million people will follow the competitions on-site, and the cumulative television audience should reach one billion viewers. Over 700 media representatives will be accredited for the event, supported by approximately 4,000 volunteers.

For comparison, the first edition of the UCI Cycling World Championships, held in 2023 in Glasgow and throughout Scotland (United Kingdom), brought together 13 UCI World Championships organized in nine venues, with the participation of 7,000 athletes (Elite and Amateur) from 131 nations. On this occasion, a total of 220 rainbow jerseys were awarded, and the competitions were followed by over one million spectators on-site and broadcast worldwide.

The circuit for the UCI Road Cycling World Championships 2027 has also been revealed. The start and finish will be in Sallanches, and the main difficulty of the 13.3 km circuit (with an elevation gain of 285 m) will be the Côte de Domancy (2.5 km with an average gradient of 9.4% and a maximum gradient of 16%). Sallanches was the venue for the 1964 and 1980 UCI Road World Championships, and it was on the Côte de Domancy that French cyclist Bernard Hinault took off to win his only title in the Road World Championships (road race) in the Elite Men's category. Riders from all categories will follow the same circuit, with the only variation being the number of laps to complete. This concept marks a return to tradition and should encourage a record number of spectators to participate in the event.

The local organizing committee is actively preparing for the event, with approximately 4,000 volunteers expected to support the championships, alongside over 700 accredited media representatives. Local authorities and cycling enthusiasts are gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the sport.
