Roglic favorite for 2025 Giro d'Italia title with Pogacar's Absence

As the 2025 Giro d'Italia kicks off this weekend, cycling enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement over Primoz Roglic's formidable bid for his sixth Grand Tour title

With fellow Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar opting out of the grueling three-week race, Roglic stands poised to seize the opportunity and claim the prestigious pink jersey once again.

Despite being one of the most accomplished road cyclists of his generation, Roglic has often found himself overshadowed by Pogacar, especially after their dramatic showdown in the 2020 Tour de France. However, the 35-year-old is determined to emerge from the shadows and solidify his legacy as he leads a powerful Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team that includes 2022 Giro winner Jai Hindley and last year's runner-up Dani Martínez.

"The goal is just to reach my best shape. The results will be what they will be,” Roglic stated earlier this season. “I don't know how fast all the other best guys will go, but looking at myself, what I can strive for is to try to build myself into the best Primoz that there was... Inside I still feel 20."

Roglic is not only targeting the Giro but also setting his sights on the Tour de France, a race that has eluded him since that fateful penultimate stage five years ago. His recent victory at the Tour of Catalonia, where he outpaced home favorite Juan Ayuso in the final stage, has further bolstered his confidence heading into the Giro.

The competition will be fierce, with young talents like Ayuso ready to challenge Roglic's ambitions. Ayuso, a teammate of Pogacar at UAE, has already made a mark this season with his victory at the week-long Tirreno-Adriatico. However, the Giro promises a level of challenge that far exceeds their previous encounters this year.

The 2025 Giro d'Italia features a staggering 52,200 meters of climbing, more than 10,000 meters above the 2024 edition, spanning 3,413 kilometers towards the final stage in Rome. Riders will embark from the Albanian town of Durres, navigating through a demanding course that includes a challenging third stage in Vlore, before winding their way up mainland Italy from Lecce in the deep south.

The additional climbing this year comes primarily from two crucial stages before the grand finale in Rome. Stage 19 will test riders with three category one climbs over 166 kilometers between Biella and Champoluc, while the penultimate Stage 20 features the daunting Colle delle Finistre, which includes 8 kilometers of gravel roads. Concerns about heavy snowfall last month led to uncertainty regarding this climb, but crews have worked diligently to ensure the route is safe for the riders.
