Groves wins neutralised Giro sixth stage as Hindley abandons

Australian cyclist Kaden Groves sprinted to a thrilling victory in the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia held in Naples on Thursday, as the race faced a dramatic turn of events with the neutralisation of the race following a mass crash that forced former champion Jai Hindley to abandon.

Groves wins neutralised Giro sixth stage as Hindley abandons

In a race marked by both triumph and tragedy, Groves of Alpecin-Deceuninck, 26, showcased his exceptional sprinting ability, narrowly edging out Belgian Milan Fretin and Frenchman Paul Magnier at the finish line. Groves’ victory comes just a year after he had previously claimed a stage win in the prestigious Giro, further solidifying his status as a formidable competitor in the cycling world.

The stage, spanning 227 kilometers, saw Lidl-Trek’s Mads Pedersen maintain his grip on the pink leader’s jersey despite finishing over five minutes behind Groves. Pedersen had reclaimed the lead on stage three and demonstrated resilience throughout the challenging course.

However, the day took a somber turn when the race was neutralised approximately 70 kilometers from the finish line due to a catastrophic crash that resulted in Hindley’s withdrawal. The 2020 Giro champion was among several riders who fell on slick roads after heavy rainfall, with many sustaining injuries. Although Hindley managed to stand, he was later seen climbing into an ambulance, leaving his team, Red Bull Bora, without a key ally for the mountainous stages ahead.

Following the crash, the race continued at a reduced pace for roughly 20 kilometers before a new start was announced, allowing riders to resume competition towards the finish. Organisers stated that all competitors would be classified with the same time, and no time bonuses were awarded, placing the focus solely on the stage victory.

As the peloton approached the outskirts of Naples with just 10 kilometers remaining, conditions had dried, setting the stage for an exhilarating finish. A breakaway attempt by Frenchman Enzo Paleni and Dutchman Taco van der Hoorn was thwarted with 2.5 kilometers to go, leading to a final sprint showdown. Wout van Aert made a decisive move in the last kilometer, but Groves surged past him, clinching the stage win and adding to the excitement of the day.

The aftermath of the crash also saw German rider Juri Hollmann forced to withdraw with a suspected fractured arm, according to his team, Alpecin-Deceuninck. As the race moves forward, the cycling community will be watching closely, particularly as the seventh stage promises to be a challenging 168-kilometer ride from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo, featuring three demanding climbs.
