In fact, founder Dean Stanton is officially recognised by Gran Fondo Guide as the inventor of the phrase “Gravel Fondo”. Dean coined the phrase whilst setting up the popular Kettle Mettle Dirty Fondo, which celebrated its 10th Anniversary in June 2025. The phrase has become synonymous in the cycling industry worldwide.
With sweeping switchbacks and panoramic views, the Sea2Sky Gravel Fondo is in a league of its own in terms wide gravel forest service roads, challenging climbs and stunning scenery, and would be difficult to match anywhere in the world. BC cyclists don’t really like the event advertised too much, because it’s so good and they want to keep it all for themselves!
The 25km Piccolo Fondo is mostly flat with a few small climbs and all on gravel roads with just over 500m of climbing and is ideally suited to beginners looking for their first off-road gravel adventure!
The 52km Medio Fondo is also pretty flat, again all on gravel roads with 900m of climbing and is suitable for intermediate gravel riders who have ridden events of the same distance.
The 85km+ Gran Fondo contains approximately 1,900m of climbing with no single track and some hills and a few spicy climbs but It is a challenging super day out in BC backcountry.
Organizers could make the Gran Fondo harder but want to stick to the 85km+ distance, ideally suited to intermediate and advanced gravel riders, “The courses are designed to be challenging and showcase the gravel roads and trails in around Squamish and the Sea to Sky Corridor,” said Dean Stanton, CEO and Founder of the Tri1Events.
Start and Finish is from Logger Sports Park in Squamish, BC
There are individual and team competitions, the team results are based on the lowest combined time, there is prize money for the top 3 overall male and female riders on the full 92km Gran Fondo route.
