Sunny Skies and Smiling Riders at 2026 Old Man Winter Gravel Rally

The eleventh edition of the Old Man Winter Gravel Rally in Lyons, Colorado welcomed riders with sunny and fast gravel roads last Sunday, February 1st.

In the marquee 75-mile mass-start, 22-year-old Justin Peck rode solo to victory in a standout time of 3:10:58

With light snow on the ground, temperatures near 60°F and dry roads, racers posted blistering times across all three distances as the event delivered competitive racing and a festive community atmosphere.

In the marquee 75-mile mass-start, 22-year-old Justin Peck rode solo to victory in a standout time of 3:10:58. Peck’s ride completed a strong day for young men’s racing, with Luke Walter (3:54:26) and Griffin Hoppin (3:11:54) joining him on the podium to give U23 competitors a sweep of the top three positions.

On the women’s side, Deanna Mayles took the win in 3:43:32, moving up from her runner-up spot in 2024 to claim Victory with a decisive margin — finishing 18 minutes ahead of Annie Hines and 22 minutes ahead of Angela Mertell.

Shorter race distances produced equally compelling results. In the 40-mile category, Christina Harner topped the women’s field in 1:45:57 while Chad Barentsen won the men’s race in 1:36:41. The 23-mile events saw Ligiana Aurrecoechea cross first among women in 1:12:35 and Robert Adair win the men’s division in 1:08:48.

Riders praised the course conditions, well-managed aid stations and the support of local volunteers, which together created a smooth and spirited event.

“The energy was electric today,” said the race director, “After years of dealing with deep snow and tough conditions, it was incredible to see the community come together on fast, sunny gravel. The racing was aggressive and tactical, and our podium finishers rode brilliantly. We’re proud to host a race that challenges riders while showcasing the beauty of Lyons and the Front Range.”

Organizers noted strong participation across age groups and categories, highlighting the event’s appeal to both competitive racers and gravel fondo enthusiasts seeking a well-supported early-season test. Local businesses and volunteer groups played a key role in the rally’s success, providing course marshals, mechanical support and post-race hospitality that kept riders energized and safe.

The Old Man Winter Gravel Rally will return next year with plans to expand rider services and refine course options while maintaining the community-driven spirit that defines the event.
