2026 UCI Granfondo Leiria Region – Sicó Lands cancelled after Storm Kristin wreaks havoc in Portugal

The Organizing Committee of the new UCI Granfondo Leiria Region – Sicó Lands in Portugal has announced the cancellation of the event for 2026, postponed until spring 2027

Storm Kristin killed at least three people and left over 800,000 residents of central and northern Portugal without electricity

In recent weeks, the region has been severely affected by the consequences of Storm Kristin, which has caused widespread disruption across the area.

Thousands of residents are still without access to electricity, and hundreds of people remain in need of rehousing. In addition, many restaurants and accommodation units are currently closed, with no clear indication of when they will be able to reopen.

The focus of the region is at this moment primarily to rebuilding the local communities and restoring the basic needs for residents.

Therefore, the event won't take place in 2026, but will be postponed to spring 2027.

Storm Kristin

Storm Kristin killed at least three people and left over 800,000 residents of central and northern Portugal without electricity on Wednesday, as it toppled trees, damaged homes, and disrupted road and rail traffic before moving inland to Spain.

One person died when a tree fell on their car in Vila Franca de Xira, on the outskirts of Lisbon, according to emergency services. Two more were killed in the central district of Leiria - one of the most affected areas - according to the local council.

Civil protection authorities reported more than 3,000 weather-related incidents, triggered by wind gusts of up to 150 km/h (93 mph), heavy rain and snowfall in the country of nearly 11 million people.

Granfondo Leiria Region – Sico Lands

Granfondo Leiria Region – Sico Lands is the new name for the succesful Granfondo Coimbra Region that moved to the nearby Leiria region for the 2026 edition of the event.  The race was being held over two days and organized by Cabreirasolutions, the organizer of the big mass participation cycling events in Portugal.

The Leiria region in central Portugal is known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and varied landscapes—from medieval castles and riverside squares to pine forests and Atlantic beaches. The city of Leiria itself blends historical charm with a vibrant cultural scene, while serving as a gateway to major attractions in the Centro region.

Just north of Leiria lies Pombal, a small historic castle town that grew around its 12th-century Templar-built fortress and later flourished under the influence of the Marquis of Pombal. Today, Pombal offers visitors a mix of heritage sites, traditional crafts, and easy access to surrounding natural areas such as Serra de Sicó, as well as quiet coastal spots like Osso da Baleia Beach. Its central location between Coimbra and Leiria makes it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the region.
