Complete Guide to the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Niseko
2026 is a big year for Niseko’s cycling community as the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will be held in Asia for the first time in Niseko, Japan on 26 – 30 August 2026. A highly anticipated event where the top amateur cyclists gather to tackle Niseko’s mountainous terrain.
If you’ve qualified for the World Championships and have started planning for your trip to Niseko, we have created a guide to offer you essential insights on what to expect for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships and where to stay in Niseko to help you prepare well ahead of race day.
Last year’s Niseko Classic served as a preview of the Championship course where participants had the opportunity to experience the course themselves.
15km Time Trial
The course is an out-and-back route starting and finishing at Kyowa Town Hall, featuring scenic sections with stunning views of the Niseko Mountain Range. With minimal climbing and almost no undulation, the course is designed to be predominantly flat with just 73m of climbing.
1.9km Team Relay
The Team Relay, held in the host town of Kutchan city center, is an official UCI World Championships event, with Rainbow Jerseys and medals awarded to the winners. Riders who are registered for the Time Trial and/or Road Race are eligible to participate.
Must Include:
One male rider (any age)
One female rider (any age)
One rider (male or female) aged 40 or over
One rider (male or female) aged 50 or over
Each team must include at least one male rider and one female rider.
140km Gran Fondo
Starting and finishing at Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu, the course passes through Rankoshi Town along the Shiribetsu River, renowned as one of the cleanest rivers in Japan. Riders then tackle the Niseko Panorama Line, home to Hokkaido’s highest KOM, before a fast descent all the way into Kyowa Town. This is a true mountain course with a total elevation gain exceeding 2,370 meters. Three feed zones will be provided along the Road Race course where riders can refill their drinks.
80km Medio Fondo
The course features a mountainous layout with 1,572 meters of total elevation gain, crossing the Niseko Panorama Line early in the race. Both the start and finish are located at Niseko Grand Hirafu, the same venue as the Gran Fondo 140 km course. Three feed zones will be provided along the Road Race course where riders can refill their drinks.
Training
With such lengthy courses, we recommend doing one 4.5 to 5-hour ride per week, including a 30-minute climb to prepare for the Panorama Line.
About Niseko
Niseko is located in Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. About two hours away by car from Sapporo or the New Chitose Airport, Niseko is best known for its quality powder snow in winter. By summer, it transforms into a playground for other outdoor activities such as rafting and cycling thanks to its lush landscapes and mild climate.

Money
The Japanese currency isn the Japanese Yen (JPY). Japan remains a largely cash-based culture, so carry sufficient cash is required.
ATMs accept international cards reliably.
Credit card acceptance has improved significantly but cash remains important in rural areas.

Signs in English is very common in tourist areas especially Niseko which is accustomed to international visitors. We recommend translation apps on your phone for things like food, taxi's and travel.

Climate
Niseko temperatures in late August range from 20-30C (68-85F) with a relative humidity of 80% making it warm (and sweaty if very hot).
Getting There
International travellers will probably fly to Tokyo and get a connecting flight to Shin-Chitose Airport near Sapporo.
Where to Stay
With road closures in place on race day, staying near the start and finish line – which will be at the Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu – is highly recommended.
