Romain Bardet’s Gravel Worlds Dreams Shattered after Brutal Mont Ventoux Crash

Romain Bardet’s season was ripped apart on Friday in the most violent way imaginable — a high-speed gravel crash on the lower slopes of Mont Ventoux that left the former WorldTour star hospitalised and his Gravel Worlds campaign hanging by a thread.

The 35-year-old Frenchman had been descending one of Ventoux’s rough forest tracks with his young son when disaster struck. Witnesses described a sudden slide, a sickening impact, and Bardet lying bloodied on the stones as emergency crews rushed in. The “Giant of Provence” has ended careers before, but rarely has it struck this cruelly.

Bardet later tried to lighten the moment, calling the climb unforgettable and the descent “a little less so,” but the images circulating online told the real story — torn skin, a battered left arm, and a face marked by the violence of the fall. He offered no medical details, only gratitude to the responders and a warning to riders about the dangers of gravel on Ventoux’s exposed flanks.

For Bardet, the timing could not be worse. After stepping away from road racing following the 2025 Critérium du Dauphiné, he had reinvented himself as one of gravel’s most convincing ex-WorldTour converts. And 2026 had been his breakout year.

He opened the season by obliterating the field at RADL GRVL in McLaren Vale, soloing across 127km of Australian heat ahead of Cameron Jones and Alexey Vermeulen. Weeks later, he dominated the UCI Castellón Gravel Race in Spain — 97km, 2,500m of climbing, and Bardet alone at the front for more than three hours. His third major win came in April at the Monaco Gravel Race, conquering 120km and 2,400m of brutal Mercantour terrain with the same icy precision that once carried him to Grand Tour podiums.

He was, without question, in the best gravel form of his life.

Bardet said afterwards, "Ventoux, the family climb was memorable, the descent on gravel bikes less so. A huge thank you to the rescue teams. Now for a few weeks of recovery. Always be careful on the roads and trails. See you soon."

Now, everything is uncertain. His Factor Racing RCC team has offered no timeline, and Bardet himself has spoken only of “several weeks of convalescence.” That vague phrase carries heavy consequences: the UCI Gravel World Championships — the first ever held outside Europe — take place in Nannup, Western Australia, on 10–11 October.
