Italian Road Rage Turns Into Horror as Driver Twice Rams Group of Cyclists

What began as a peaceful Saturday ride through the quiet valleys near Turin erupted into a scene of chaos and terror, after a 73-year-old driver allegedly launched two deliberate attacks on a group of cyclists — an act investigators now describe as attempted murder.

The six riders, friends on a planned outing from San Mauro, Settimo Torinese and San Raffaele Cimena, were pedalling towards Coassolo when the tranquillity of the morning shattered. According to witness accounts, the driver — identified by Italian media as Giuseppe Campagna — stormed past them, horn blaring in a furious, unbroken assault.

One cyclist, startled and frustrated, raised a hand in protest. That simple gesture was all it took.

Campagna reportedly slowed, giving the impression he was letting the group pass — only to suddenly slam his car into reverse, accelerating directly into the riders with violent force.

The impact hurled one cyclist thirty metres down the road, his bike and body thrown like debris in a storm. As the stunned group scrambled to help their injured friend, others sprinted after the fleeing vehicle, desperate to capture the number plate.

But the nightmare wasn’t over.

The driver allegedly turned his car around, aimed at the group, and charged at them again. A second cyclist was struck, then more were hit as they stood in the road trying to help the wounded. In seconds, the quiet mountain road became a scene of devastation.

Four cyclists were injured — two critically. Two were airlifted to Turin’s CTO hospital; the others rushed to San Giovanni Bosco. A 60-year-old suffered a fractured femur, a compound leg fracture, and severe facial and chest trauma. Another, aged 68, sustained serious shoulder and pelvic injuries. Miraculously, none are believed to be in life-threatening condition.

Campagna fled — but later walked into the carabinieri barracks in Venaria and surrendered. After questioning, prosecutors placed him under house arrest, charging him with attempted murder and causing multiple injuries.
