Finlay Tarling killed in head-on collision on eighth stage of 2026 Volta a Portugal

The organisers of the Volta a Portugal and the NSN Development Team confirm with profound sorrow that Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British cyclist, has died following a head-on collision during today’s eighth stage of the race.

Tarling was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on the closed race course during the 166.8km stage from Melgaço to Fafe. Despite immediate medical intervention, his injuries were fatal.

NSN Development Team issued the following statement:

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today. Fin was a much-loved member of our team — but above all, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed. Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents, Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.”

The President of Portugal, António José Seguro, expressed national condolences, stating that Tarling’s death has “plunged the peloton, the race, and the host nation into mourning.”

The Volta a Portugal organisation released its own statement:

“The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the eighth stage of the race. At this moment of profound dismay, the organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones.”

In respect for Tarling’s memory, the remainder of the stage was neutralised, and all podium ceremonies scheduled for today have been cancelled.

Tarling’s passing marks one of the darkest days in recent cycling history. The Volta a Portugal, the peloton, and the global cycling community stand united in grief.
