Complete Carnage on Stage 4 of the Criterium du Dauphine

Egan Bernal didn't start, Steven Kruijswijk and Emanuel Buchmann crash heavily and abandon, Roglic crashes and nearly abandons!

Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) broke his collar bone

It was a dramatic day at the Dauphine with non stop action leaving racing fans in disbelief of what the hell was going on.

First up, Team Ineos' best placed and in form rider, Bernal didn't start, due to a back injury.

A dangerous breakaway went away and built up a lead of over 3m 20s with 97 kms go including; Michal Kwiatkowski, Julian Alaphilippe, Kenny Elissonde, Fausto Masnada, Lennard Kämna, Jack Haig, David de la Cruz, Marc Hirschi, Marc Soler, Nicolas Edet, Dylan van Baarle, Luis Leon Sanchez, Matej Mohoric, Thomas De Gendt and Dylan Teuns.

Jumbo Visma got nervous and started to chase, however a bad crash saw Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) abandon the race, Kruijswijk reported to have a dislocated shoulder.

As the breakaway crested the Col des Aravis, De la Cruz picked up maximum points on the first two summits earlier in the day, while the break now had 3'10 of a lead with 100 km to go.

Jumbo Visma wouldn't give the break much of an advantage, the gap was 3m 50s as the breakaway hit the category 2 Cote d'Hery sur Ugine.

The pace was so high in the peloton, André Greipel (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Andreas Schillinger (Bora-Hansgrohe) climbed off.

With 70 kilometers to go, the breakaway had a lead of 3m 40s, reports came in over race radio that overall leader Roglic had crashed.

Roglic was seen getting into the team car, his race over, but was seen to getting back on the bike.

Meanwhile the breakaway of 15 riders started to climb the brutal Montee de Bisanne with a lead of 4m with 62 km to go.

Tom Dumoulin was seen turning himself inside out for his Jumbo teammates to bring the breakaway back, while Alaphilippe licked his lips up front seemingly already celebrating a stage win.

Angry Jumbo bees turned the gas up to full and the peloton imploded as Landa, Quintana and Pinot desperately tried to hang on.

The breakway's lead came down quickly to 1m 52s with 20 kms to go.

With 10 kms to go, 5 riders from the day's breakaway; De La Cruz, Alaphilippe, Haig and Elissonde and Lennard Kamna were out in front.

With 7 km to go, Elissonde attacked De la Cruz and Kamna countered and went round Elissonde.

With 3 kms to go, Lennard Kamna attacked and went solo to take the stage win after a long day in the breakaway.

What was left of the peloton behind rolled over the line 3 minutes later with Jumb Visma protecting Roglic's overall race lead.

However Roglic, only has 35 seconds lead over six of his main rivals coming into the final stage, without Kruijswijk, Jumbo Visma will have a hard time controlling the race as anyone of his rivals could launch a long range attack.

The final stage around Megève is a hilly 154 km with no less than 8 categorized climbs.
