The Italian – who also crashed two weeks ago while descending Teide with Astana team mate Alexey Lutsenko – was clearly conscious and moving in the TV footage of the incident which he has shared on social media, below.

However, he appears to suggest he has no memory of a 20-minute period after taking a bad bang on the head, though he reports now being given the all clear by medical staff.

His team said he suffered “wounds on his face and broke one tooth, four stitches on eyebrow and three stitches on upper lip have been applied”.

Battistella also commented on the crash, saying: “I’ve lost the memory on what happened yesterday at Amstel gold race. I crashed so hard on the ground that I wasn’t conscious for 20 mins or more… Luckily the medical staff at the hospital said is all ‘ok’. I just need recovery and stay under control.”
