Simon Yates wins opening time trial at the Giro d'Italia
Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange - Jayco) sealed his GC ambitions, winning the opening time-trial while Mathieu van der Poel rode to second place and kept the Pink Jersey
The 9.2 kilometer individual time-trial had the possibility of creating small gaps between the GC favourites, however the technical aspect of the time-trial and the final hilltop climb in Budapest's historic center led the GC riders to fight for the stage win, with Yates succeeding.
Alex Dowsett and Edoardo Affini set strong early times, then Matteo Sobrero went faster followed quickly by Tom Dumoulin and finally Simon Yates set a time that could not further be beaten.
Yates sustained the best time throughout the course, with race leader Mathieu van der Poel arriving in second place and securing the Pink Jersey for another day.
Tom Dumoulin put in a strong performance, throwing out any doubt about his form and finished in third place.
