Five riders broke clear just after the start including Davide Bais, Filippo Magli, Mads Würtz Schmidt, Valerio Conti and Lucas Eriksson, and carvde out a gap of over 6 minutes.

On the approach to the first climb to the finishing circuit the five were caught and the race started all over again.

Julian Alaphilippe attacked  and the  favourites birdged across except for Van der Poel and Girmay. They rejoined the first group just before the penultimate climb to the line, only to lose contact again and Pidcock and Sheffield were also dropped.

A regroupment took place before the finish climb, both Pidcock and Van Aert crashed with 4 kilometres to go.

Leader Ganna was dropped on the climb with Primoz Roglic sprintinf to a commanding victory ahead of Alaphilippe and Yates who finished in second and third place without ever being in real contention for the win.
