Juan Ayuso beats Filippo Ganna at Tirreno – Adriatico opening time trial
Two times former Tirreno – Adriatico winner Filippo Ganna crossed the finish line one second behind Juan Ayuso.
The young gun of UAE Team Emirates, teammate of Tadej Pogacar, made the difference in the second half of the race and took his third time trial victory after the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse last year. Pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard finished 22 seconds down despite his new aero helmet.
Jonathan milan, winner of the points classification at the Giro d'Italia last year, was third and showed a great form ahead of the first sprinters stage in Follonica tomorrow.
Stage winner and Maglia Azzurra wearer Juan Ayuso said: “It's great to win the time trial. I suffered till the last moment watching the other riders coming. It's a double victory: the stage and the time gap I got. It's quite a lot even though with one minute I wouldn't secure against Jonas Vingegaard. Tirreno-Adriatico is a very importance race in the development of my career. From this race, I'll be able to see my level compared to Vingegaard and the other best riders in the world, to know where I am, what to work on and to keep on improving. To start like this is great!”
