Phil Bauhaus dominates final sprint at Gualdo Tadino on Stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico
Bauhaus (Bahrain - Victorious) easily beat Jonathan Milan and Kévin Vauquelin on the run into Umbria after a long, cold and wet day
The longest stage of the race travelled from Volterra to Gualdo Tadino, a small town in Umbria.
Rain ended up being the main difficulty on the long 225km stage, making for a low average speed until the final twenty kilometers, when the peloton decided to ramp up the pace. Many of the sprinters lost positions or were even left behind before the flamme rouge. A crash on a wet corner disrupted the finale, leaving only a handful of riders in the frame, and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) was the one who prevailed from that group.
Jonathan Milan’s eyes flashed with tenacity, the Italian sprinter crossed the line in second place, having fought with Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) until the very last meter.
Meanwhile, Juan Ayuso suffered in the cold and wet conditions but kept the race leader’s blue jersey as the race reaches it's expected showdown with Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike) on the key mountain stages on Friday and Saturday.
Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike) stayed wrapped up and hidden in the peloton on stage 4 and remains fifth overall, 22 seconds down on Ayuso.
Tirreno-Adriatico continues Thursday with a stage for the baroudeurs finishing in Giulianova, but also the puncheurs could have a chance of featuring in the fight for victory.
