Vingegaard seals Tirreno-Adriatico overall victory with second brutal attack

Having moved into the overall lead of the race on yesterday’s stage to Valle Castellana, Jonas Vingegaard sealed overall victory at Tirreno-Adriatico with a impressive stage win on the slopes of Monte Petrano on stage six.

He attacked main rivals Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) with 6km to go on the slopes of the Monte Petrano, with neither beig able to respond for a second day in a row.

Vingegaard now leads the race by 1m 24s going into the final sprint stage around San Benedetto del Tronto tomorrow.

The stage started with a nine-man breakaway including Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), Iván García Cortina (Movistar) and Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X), Richard Carapaz and Ben Healy from (EF Education-EasyPost).

With 40 km ot go only Richard Carapaz and Ben Healy from (EF Education-EasyPost) and Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X) were left. On the final climb of the Monte Petrano, it was just Carapaz on his own.

Jai Hindley was the first to attack with just less than 7km to go with Jonas Vingegaard and Juan Ayuso following. Vingegaard attacked next and neither rivals Hindley nor Carapaz could respond, and the Dane opened up another gap and rode away.

Vingegaard soloed to the stage win, behind Ayuso came round Hindley for the second day in a row, with the Australian forced to settle for third place once again.

Ayuso’s teammate Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) took fourth place to move up to fourth overall in an impressive display.

The stage victory practically sealed Vingegaard’s collection of the Trident tomorrow, with over a minute’s lead ahead of Ayuso in the GC.

Barring any crashes he will win the race overall, as the stage is expected to end in a bunch sprint for the fast men, who will be eager to take another stage victory this early on in the season.
