Hartog and Schmidt Claim UCI Gravel Challenge Blaavandshuk Titles in Denmark
Mads Wurtz Schmidt (PAS RACING) and LaLarissa Hartog (ZZPR.NL ORANGE BABIES CYCLING TEAM) emerged victorious at the UCI Gravel Challenge Blaavandshuk on Saturday, conquering a grueling 130-kilometer course that tested the limits of over 1,000 riders along Denmark's picturesque coastline
Schmidt, a 31-year-old Danish cyclist, showcased his strength and determination as he crossed the finish line solo in a remarkable time of 3:26:34. Following closely behind was teammate Magnus Bak Klaris, who previously won the UCI Worthersee in April, finishing at 3:26:48. Paul Voss rounded out the podium for the men with a time of 3:31:09.
In the women's category, 24-year-old Larissa Hartog claimed victory with a time of 4:04:39, solidifying her position as a rising star in the cycling world. Following Hartog were Wendy Oosterwoud and Marla Sigmund, who finished just two minutes later, securing second and third places, respectively. The defending champion, Tessa Neefjes, came in fifth at 4:11:39, showcasing the fierce competition that characterized this year's event.
The UCI Gravel Challenge Blaavandshuk was not for the faint of heart. The challenging course, which meandered over sandy beaches and through active military training zones, proved difficult for many participants. A significant number of riders faced the harsh realities of the course, with only the most resilient completing the race. Those who finished in the top 25% of their age/gender category earned a coveted qualification spot for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships, set to take place in the Netherlands next October.
"This race was a true test of grit and perseverance," said Schmidt after his victory. "The course was incredibly demanding, but the atmosphere and support from the fans made it all worthwhile. I'm proud to represent Denmark on this stage."
Hartog echoed similar sentiments, expressing her excitement about her win. "Winning here in Denmark is a dream come true. The course was tough, but I pushed through, and I’m thrilled to have secured my spot for the World Championships."
The UCI Gravel Challenge Blaavandshuk not only showcased the strength and determination of its participants but also highlighted the growing popularity of gravel racing in the cycling community. As more cyclists seek challenging terrains and unique experiences, events like this one continue to attract a diverse range of competitors.
