Hunter Smith and Malezsewski Tough out UCI Safari Gravel Race in Kenya
In an electrifying showdown under the sun, Lukas Malezsewski (BEL) and Hailey Hunter Smith (CAN) emerged victorious in the second edition of the UCI Safari Gravel Race, held in the picturesque landscapes of Kenya. Malezsewski clinched a dramatic victory in the men’s elite category, while Smith celebrated a solo triumph in the women’s race, marking their first wins in the UCI gravel series
The Safari Gravel Race, renowned for its challenging terrain and stunning scenery, once again tested the mettle of cyclists from around the globe. This year’s event featured a competitive field, including last year’s champion Hans Becking (NED) and local favorite Charles Kagimu (KEN). The men’s elite race unfolded with an early breakaway, as Becking, Kagimu, Lukas Baum (GER), and Malezsewski quickly established a lead over the chasing pack.
As the race progressed, the quartet worked collaboratively to build a significant gap, showcasing their endurance and tactical prowess over the grueling 111-kilometer course. The finale saw an exhilarating sprint to the finish, where Lukas Malezsewski outpaced Kagimu and Baum, crossing the line first and securing his inaugural UCI gravel victory.
“This win is incredibly special to me,” Malezsewski said after the race. “The competition was fierce, and to come out on top against such talented riders is an achievement I will cherish. The atmosphere in Kenya is unlike any other, and I’m grateful for the experience.”
In the women’s race, Hailey Hunter Smith displayed remarkable strength and determination, completing the course solo and finishing with a commanding lead. Smith’s victory marks her first UCI win, an accomplishment that resonates deeply with her as she continues to make her mark on the international cycling scene.
“I’m overjoyed to have won my first UCI race here in Kenya,” said Smith. “The support from the local community and the breathtaking views along the route made this experience unforgettable. I’m excited for what lies ahead in my cycling career.”
The podium for the women’s elite category was rounded out by Claudette Nyirahabimana (KEN), who not only secured second place overall but also triumphed in the F19-34 category, and Svenja Betz (GER), alongside last year’s winner Maddy Nutt (GBR), who completed the top four finishers.
The UCI Safari Gravel Race continues to grow in prestige, attracting elite cyclists and gravel enthusiasts alike. As competitors push their limits in the rugged terrain of Kenya, the event stands as a testament to the spirit of adventure and the unyielding passion for cycling.
