Jonas Vingegaard takes the Yellow Jersey in Team Time Trial at the 2026 Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard from Team Visma Lease a Bike takes the Yellow Jersey after beating Filippo Ganna and Tadej Pogacar in Barcelona

The stage starts near the beach Barcelona took on two climbs up to the city's Montjuïc Olympic Stadium with the fastest rider in each team setting the time.

For the first time in a while, stage one of the Tour de France was a team time trial.

This year saw a change to the team time trial, with the first rider across the finish line setting the time, not the first four. Tactics changed so teams protected their fastest rider at the back of their train and then pulled over leaving their best rider to go to the line up the final climb of Montjuïc Olympic Stadium.

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, set the first fastest time of 22:59, an average speed of 55kph. Team TotalEnergies set the next fastest time of 22:49.

Groupama-FDJ United were next to go faster in a time of 22:28 as Romain Grégoire went solo for them in the final, and absolutely flew up the final hill. The recently-crowned French national road champion looked in great shape.

Tom Pidcock set off alone in the final part of the course for Pinarello Q36.5, to help set the second fastest time, but still fell a whole 15 seconds short of Groupama’s time.

Movistar GC leader Uijtdebroeks started to struggle and their team had to sit up and wait for him, they ultimately posted only the seventh best time at the finish.

Mathieu van der Poel's Alpecin-Premier Tech were next to go faster in 22:26.

Time trial powerhouse Filippo Ganna and Tobia Foss went solo for Netcompany INEOS after setting the fastest time at third checkpoint with Ganna taking 31 seconds off Alpecin-Premier Tech's time in 21:55, an average speed of over 53 kph.

Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) ultimately dropped the rest of his Decathlon teammates before the finish, and flew up the final climb to post the second fastest time, 31 in arrears.

Juan Ayuso from Lidl-Trek just missed the fastest time by 8 seconds. Red Bull's Remco Evenepoel drove it to the line but was 11 seconds short.

Team Visma Lease a Bike a Lease went all in for their GC rider Jonas Vingegaard. The 2026 Giro d'Italia winner drove up the final climb to take 8 seconds of Team INEOS's at 21:47.

Tadej Pogacar was determined to try and take the stage for UAE Team Emirates XRG but finished 11s down behind Netcompany INEOS in third place overall.

Jonas Vingegaard took the Yellow Jersey, Egan Bernal took the Green Jersey, Tadej Pogacar the Polka Dot Jersey and Juan Ayuso the White Jersey.
