Finally Jasper Philipsen wins a sprint at the 2026 Tour de France

Jasper Philipsen finally claimed his first sprint victory of the 2026 Tour de France, powering to a dominant win on Stage 17 after a textbook lead-out from Mathieu van der Poel. On a day shaped by Alpine fatigue and a reduced bunch sprint, Philipsen launched with perfect timing, opening several bike lengths on Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij, both already stage winners earlier in the race.

For Philipsen, it was an 11th career Tour stage win and a long-awaited breakthrough in this year’s edition after five top-five finishes without sealing the deal.

The Belgian’s victory also tightened the battle for the green jersey. His 50-point haul moved him to within just seven points of Mads Pedersen, who finished eighth and continues to lead the points classification. Philipsen’s sprint was made possible by van der Poel’s trademark power on the final run-in, the former world champion dragging the group into the last kilometre before peeling off to leave his teammate perfectly positioned.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar finished safely in the main peloton nearly nine minutes down, maintaining his overall lead without stress but with one new concern. Adam Yates, a crucial climbing lieutenant for UAE Emirates-XRG, struggled throughout the stage after a stomach issue the previous night. His difficulties were visible on every climb, a potential vulnerability for Pogacar with decisive mountain stages still to come.

Schmid and Kooij rounded out the podium behind Philipsen, while Lewis Askey, Rick Pluimers, Clément Russo, Huub Artz, Pedersen, Michael Matthews and Aaron Gate completed the top ten. In the general classification, Pogacar continues to hold a commanding advantage over Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro, with Paul Seixas and Juan Ayuso rounding out the top five. Mattias Skjelmose, Lenny Martinez, Tom Pidcock, Jordan Jegat and Yannis Voisard complete the top ten overall as the Tour heads toward its final mountain tests.
