There are a couple of attributes that give the Reconco Gerês Granfondo an unparalleled status: it takes place in the only protected area with the category of National Park and is distinguished by being the oldest granfondo in Portugal. The 13th edition takes place on June 7, 2026 and marks the return to the Cabreira mountain range, to some of the most beautiful dams in the country and also to the 'walls' of Pincães and Ermida.

Those who opt for the shorter distance (minifondo) will face a challenge with 56 km, of medium-low difficulty. The climb from the Caniçada dam to Cerdeirinhas is easy to transpose and from there to Salamonde – nestled between the Cabreira and Gerês mountains – it is always downhill. The passages through Fafião and the rise of the 'wall' of the Chapel will be missing. It is 3 km with an average slope of 6.5%, but the initial thousand meters are made at (hard) 11.8%.

This postcard classified by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve will appear even more illustrated in the eyes of participants who opt for the 89 km of the mediofondo. The Ermal reservoir and the Cabreira mountain range are among the passing itineraries, followed by Salamonde, at the foot of the slope, which will lead the granfondistas to the Ermida ramp, the last great difficulty of this distance.

Continuing to intersect the territories of Vieira do Minho and Terras de Bouro, the adventure will be even more rewarding (and demanding!) for those who embrace the challenge of completing the granfondo. There are 130 km marked by sweeping landscapes that, in addition to the places already mentioned, will open the way to the Venda Nova dam. Located in the transition zone between Minho and Trás-os-Montes, where the Cávado and Rabagão rivers converge, this will give rise to the impulse to attack the 'walls' of Pincães (2km/10.7%) and Ermida.
