2021 Bike and Beers Series - The Most Fun on Two Wheels!

The Black Rat Gran Fondo

The Black Rat Gran Fondo

May 22 2022
Bristol, South West, UK

The ride starts at Marlwood School, Alveston, near Bristol. The ride will start at 8.15am.

Marlwood School is ideally situated in a quiet, rural area with instant access to the route that all riders will take to reach Aust and the Severn Bridge.

After leaving the school, you will join the B4661 which takes you directly to the Severn Bridge, which you will cross to go to Chepstow.

After passing through Chepstow, you will climb up towards the Forest of Dean, heading through St. Briavels and on towards Coleford. The road undulates through the forest and is generally quiet making for a rewarding cycling experience.

After leaving Coleford, the route heads to Staunton before descending the fabulous Staunton Road into Monmouth where we cross the River Wye  and head through the High Street to the first feed station.

Near the centre of town, at the bottom of the High Street you will reach your first feed station, situated next to the footbridge / cycle way over the river. Decent Public toilets are very close to the feed station location. After leaving the feed station you will head north out of town towards Rockfield.

After Rockfield the route climbs very gently for the next 40km all the way to Hay on Wye, where you will find the next feed station. Be sure to take on some fuel here because the biggest and steepest climb of the day is just around the corner!

After leaving Hay on Wye, we follow a small road for a few miles before turning off to tackle Gospel Pass, the highest road in Wales.

Those of you who rode the 2018 or 2019 event will have ridden down the side of the pass that you will climb this time. The bottom 2km are quite steep but the gradient does come down to fairly easy levels once you cross the cattle grid and are out of the forest and on to the moor.

Once you crest the top of the pass, you have a great descent for a couple of km but once you cross the cattle grid, you need to be aware that there are some tight bends ahead on a single track road so this short section needs caution!

Once you reach Capel y Ffin you will be rewarded with a beautiful descent on a very quiet road all the way back to Abergavenny where you will join Mediofondo riders again.

We have a great road to ride along after leaving Abergavenny, taking us into Raglan. Never too busy, this road is a real pleasure to ride.

The final feed station will be in Raglan at 147km into the ride.

After leaving Raglan you will head towards Devauden, climbing the Star on the Hill climb en route.

The descent from Devauden to Chepstow via Itton is a firm favourite with us and with most people that have ridden the Black Rat over the years and we have managed to include it again this year. Fast, wide and great fun it comes as a welcome end to all of the serious climbing.

After passing Chepstow and crossing the Severn once again, it’s just 5km back to the finish where you can enjoy some well earned food and have some cider in your souvenir mug.

The Granfondo route is 181km long and has 2423m of climbing.
