Gears & Beers: Bayou 100 benefits the Delta Bike Project, a 501c3 community bike shop in Mobile that works to enhance the cycling experience by empowering people with the knowledge of basic bicycle maintenance through their guided, do-it-yourself model of teaching repair skills and community programming. In the last three years, the DBP has provided over 500 bikes to the community, many of which have been earned by people with little to no income, as well as at-risk elementary school children through their Time is Money and Read to Ride programs.

The founders of the Delta Bike Project embody a strong sense of place on the Gulf Coast, and participating riders will share that sense as they begin their ride in historic downtown Mobile where large majestic oak trees dripping with Spanish Moss line the streets. The route then heads south as it hugs the western shore of Mobile Bay, before sending riders through Bellingrath Gardens and south to Bayou la Batre, where one of seven possible rest stops allows riders to see life in a working bayou, complete with dozens of shrimp boats, white pelicans and a towering 50-foot pile of oyster shells. Riders that stop in the Bayou will get a special culinary treat as well! Gears & Beers has rides that fit cyclists of different skill levels by offering 10, 30, 63 and 101-mile ride options.

Ride Organizers at the Delta Bike Project pride themselves on having rides with beautiful views, significant in-ride support and route markings that you can see from space! Participation in Gears & Beers: Bayou 100 will give you a real Gulf Coast experience that you won’t want to miss! Registration will be live soon, but in the meantime, check out the Delta Bike Project at www.deltabikeproject.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/deltabikeproject.
