Aly Nielson and Land Lambert take Victory at the 2026 Gran Fondo Utah

The 2026 Gran Fondo Utah delivered another unforgettable edition as riders from across the country descended on Payson, Utah, for a day of high-altitude racing, dramatic scenery, and fierce competition across all distances. Hosted by the Gran Fondo National Series.

The 2026 Gran Fondo Utah was shaped entirely by the riders who mastered the event’s signature timed segments — the steep ramps, exposed switchbacks, and high-altitude grind of Mount Nebo. With the Gran Fondo featuring three timed sections, the Medio two, and the Piccolo one, every decisive moment happened where the gradients were steepest and the clock was running.

The Gran Fondo opened with Timed Section 1, a long drag toward the base of Nebo that immediately forced selections. Land Lambert surged to the front as the road tilted upward, stringing out the field behind him. Chase Bracher and Tyler Kirk matched the early tempo, but Lambert’s smooth, relentless climbing began to show its effect even before the real mountain arrived.

Timed Section 2 continued the assault toward Nebo, climbing deeper into the canyon and onto the exposed upper slopes. This is where Land Lambert made his decisive move. As the gradients sharpened, he launched a perfectly timed acceleration that cracked the final group. Behind him, Michael Twohig and Aly Nielson delivered standout rides — Nielson climbing with the front men and putting massive time into the rest of the women’s field.

The final and most brutal segment, Timed Section 3 on Mount Nebo, sealed the victories. The high-altitude switchbacks demanded absolute commitment. Land Lambert held his advantage with a composed, powerful ascent, securing the overall Gran Fondo win through dominance across all three timed sections. Aly Nielson, already well ahead in the women’s race, continued to climb with authority, finishing with a segment time strong enough to place her inside the men’s top five — a commanding, championship-level performance.

The Medio Fondo followed a similar pattern, with two timed sections shaping the entire race. The first segment — the long run-up toward Nebo — immediately split the field. Dustin Fenn attacked from the base, riding the entire segment solo and forcing the chasers into damage control. The second segment, the Nebo climb, rewarded pure climbers, and Fenn again proved strongest, sealing his victory with the fastest combined segment times of the day. In the women’s Medio, Kathryn Espenschied used the first segment to establish her lead, then defended it with a steady, controlled effort on the Nebo climb.

The Piccolo Fondo, with its single decisive timed section, became a pure power test. The opening climb demanded perfect pacing, and Nathan Adams delivered exactly that — attacking early, cresting the climb with authority, and holding his speed through the final meters of the timed zone. In the women’s race, Jamie Jurak executed the same strategy, powering up the climb from the base and riding clear of the field before the segment ended.

Across all distances, the riders who mastered the timed sections — the run-up to Nebo, the Mount Nebo climb itself, and the explosive Piccolo ascent — rose to the top. Their performances earned 35 riders qualification for the 2026 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships in Frederick, Maryland.

Post-Race riders enjoyed their choice of beverages at the new beer garden and food truck options while Payson City's Adventure Days Festival took place. There were movies and activities for families, including an adaptive obstacle course and a pickleball tournament. In addition to Payson City, Explore Utah Valley supports Gran Fondo Utah by promoting the area's destination options, including flying into Provo, a closer, more convenient alternative to Salt Lake City.

Gran Fondo Utah continues to expand the Gran Fondo National Series' presence in the western U.S., giving riders more opportunities to compete for the overall season title.
