2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships to be held in France

The 2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will take place on 22 - 24 August 2027, hosted in Thônes – La Clusaz, in the Haute-Savoie region of France., part of the part of the massive 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships.

The 2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships will take place on 22 August and 24 August 2027, hosted in Thônes – La Clusaz, in the Haute-Savoie region of France. These championships form part of the massive 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships, a 13-day multi-discipline festival held across Haute-Savoie and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, featuring 20 world championship events and more than 15,000 athletes.

The Gran Fondo races in Thônes–La Clusaz will again include both men’s and women’s age-group categories, following the established format of long-distance mass-start road events on challenging Alpine terrain. While the organiser has not yet released the 2027 GPX files, the region’s profile suggests a selective course with sustained climbing, fast valley sections, and technical descents typical of the Aravis mountains. The Gran Fondo events take place early in the championship programme, two days apart, providing qualification pathways for amateur riders worldwide.

The UCI has confirmed that the 2027 Road World Championships will be held on the historic Sallanches circuit, returning to the same mountainous loop last used for the Worlds in 1980.

The route is infamous for its severity. In the 1980 edition, Bernard Hinault dominated the men’s road race after completing 20 laps of the Cote de Domancy climb, accumulating close to 6,000 metres of elevation. Only 14 riders reached the finish that day, cementing the course’s reputation as one of the most demanding World Championship routes ever used. Riders visiting the area today will still find a statue of Hinault near the autoroute exit from Geneva, marking the entrance to the 14 km circuit.

The 2027 event follows the launch of the UCI’s new “Super World Championships” format, which will debut next year in Glasgow. That combined festival will bring together more than 200 world titles across eleven days, covering a wide spectrum of cycling disciplines. The programme for the Super Worlds includes: Gran Fondo, road racing, time trial, cross-country, marathon MTB, downhill, gravel, velodrome track, BMX racing and freestyle, artistic cycling, cycle-ball, and both road and track para-cycling. For 2027, France will introduce several new championship categories, including: gravel, enduro, pump track, junior road/track/time trial, cycling esports, and bike polo.
