Acclaimed 100 mile cycling event returns in September to headline a summer of cycling in Devon

It is nearly time for second stage of the eagerly anticipated cycling event Plymouth Gran Fondo 2016, September 18th will host the Gran Fondo 100 mile route and The Medio 70 mile route, starting in Plymouth City Centre and taking riders through Devon and Cornwall

The Plymouth Gran Fondo, 18th September 2016The mass participation cycling event follows the successful Piccolo (40 miles) and Settanta rides (70 miles) which took place earlier this year in May, attracting over 300 riders. Based from its new waterfront location of Royal William Yard hosted by Rockets & Rascals and supported by Urban Splash, the event is headlining a summer of cycling in Plymouth. The longest and most demanding routes of any cycling event in the area, riders will go from moor to coast in both Devon and Cornwall, a technical ride - the routes will challenge the participants.

Event Partner Urban Splash’s Emily Handslip spoke about the partnership, “Urban Splash is delighted to be part of this year’s Plymouth Gran Fondo, building a sustainable and active community is at the centre of what we do and Plymouth Gran Fondo is a perfect event for us to be part of. We’re looking forward to welcoming riders and their families to the event at Royal William Yard”.

Event organisers Jim Pascoe and Steve Toze are delighted to be running the 100 mile event for a second year after last years success. Hosting the events at Royal William Yard with Urban Splash is a great way to show riders another part of Plymouth’s waterfront and should promise some exciting pre and post event entertainment for the riders and their families at both events.

Jim Pascoe Event Director Spike Sports commented; “It’s fantastic to be bringing The Plymouth Gran Fondo back for a second year. The idea of the weekend last year was to showcase the area to riders of all abilities, we had such a great response from the riders who really enjoyed the variation of riding terrain. It’s unfortunate that due to my injury we have had to postpone the 100 mile ride until September, but the new event format is already having a good response from the riders with a great response fro the shorter distances earlier last month. Once again we have teamed up with the National Trust and Destination Plymouth alongside new sponsor Urban Splash to ensure that the riding is of the highest quality and that there is plenty for friends and family to do.”

With 3 months to go until the event there is still plenty of time to train through the summer months and Rockets and Rascals are on hand offering training rides throughout the summer to help less experienced riders get used to the terrain and some longer distances. Although these are technical rides that require training the idea is still to get any many members of the cycling community involved as possible.

Steve Toze Owner Rockets & Rascals Bicycle Emporium based on the Barbican and Royal William Yard “Last years Plymouth Gran Fondo was a great event to be part of, the vibe of hundreds of cyclists starting and finishing an event in the city was fantastic. The South West is a beautiful place, and cyclists can look forward to some excellent riding. There are bigger events like the Dartmoor Classic but this is something different, it’s a rider’s ride - unrelenting yet rewarding at the same time”

The Plymouth Gran Fondo takes place on 18th September 2016.
