Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish to ride 2016 Tour of Britain

Tour of Britain organisers have confirmed that Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Owain Doull will take part in this year’s race

Wiggins and Doull were members of Great Britain's Olympic gold medal-winning pursuit team in Rio and will now both ride for WIGGINS at their home tour, which takes place from September 4-11.

Doull finished third overall at last year's race and the 2016 edition will be one of his final outings for WIGGINS before joining Team Sky.

The duo join Tour de France stage winners Mark Cavendish, Steve Cummings and Andre Greipel, who have all already confirmed their participation.

Wiggins, the 2013 champion, will ride the race for the ninth time, less than a month after winning team pursuit gold on the track in Rio to become Great Britain’s most decorated Olympian.

Owain Doull, who was also part of the victorious team pursuit quartet in Brazil, will also ride the Tour of Britain for Wiggins’ eponymous team, before joining Team Sky for 2017. Cavendish will also return to duty on the road with Dimension Data having added an Olympic silver medal in the omnium to his palmares in Rio.

“We are delighted to be welcoming two of our Olympic Champions to the Tour of Britain just three weeks after their success in Rio,” said Tour of Britain race director Mick Bennett.

“As a former winner of the Tour of Britain it is always a pleasure to welcome Sir Bradley Wiggins back to Britain’s biggest race, while Owain Doull was the star of the 2015 Tour, showing he has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Nineteen teams will ride the 2016 Tour of Britain, including ten WorldTour squads: Team Sky, BMC Racing, Cannondale-Drapac, Lotto-Soudal, Movistar, Orica-BikeExchange, Dimension Data, Giant-Alpecin, LottoNL-Jumbo and Trek-Segafredo

Team Wiggins are one of five domestic squads set to line-up, alongside JLT-Condor, Madison-Genesis, NFTO and An Post-Chain Reaction, while a Great Britain under-23 squad will also contest the race, as well as four UCI Pro Continental squads: ONE Pro Cycling, Bardiani-CSF, Caja Rural-Seguros and
Wanty Groupe Gobert.

The 2016 Tour of Britain will take place from Sunday September 4 to Sunday September 11, with eight stages concluding in London.
