Adrien Costa is back on the bike just over 11 weeks after a climbing accident saw him lost his right leg

The promising American rider was badly injured in a climbing accident earlier this year while climbing the north ridge of Mount Conness in Mono County, a two-tonne rock gave way and crushed Costa’s leg against another bolder.

He was evacuated by helicopter for emergency medical treatment, unfortunately the severity of the injury to the American’s leg, left doctors no choice but to amputate.

Costa was taking time away from Pro cycling when he had the accident last summer. 

Costa was an rising American star, winning stages in the Tour of Utah and won the 2016 Tour de Bretagne, and went on to ride as a stagiaire with Etixx-Quick-Step. Costa who as riding with Hagens Berman Axeon, withdrew from the Pro scene in 2017.

Christopher Blevins, a friend and former teammate of Costa’s on the Hagens Berman Axeon team, posted a photo of Costa out riding in California.

With his new prosthetic leg, he's been out riding and has also been learning to use his new leg with his other passion climbing - on a vertical climbing wall.

A fundraising page was set up by Costa’s team to help the youngster in his rehabilitation.

The page raised over $128,000 dollars with donations coming in from the likes of Lance Armstrong, Axel Mercx, Nathan Haas, Michael Valgren and Roman Bardet. Armstrong donating $10,000 to help with Costa's medical bills and rehabilitation.

Costa posted on Instagram thanking his followers for their support, “A touch over two months ago I was reminded of the fragility of and impermanence of our existences on this Earth. Since I’ve been carried by the support and love from you all, and I realise just how beautiful that makes life. Thank you”
