The Velo d'Or is an annual award presented to the best professional cyclist of the year. It is often considered one of the most prestigious honors in the sport of cycling.

The award was created by the French cycling magazine Velo and is decided by a panel of international journalists who cover cycling. The recipient is chosen based on their performances, victories, and overall impact on the sport during the year.

Already the Olympic champion in mountain biking and a world champion in four cycling disciplines -- road, cyclo-cross, gravel and mountain biking -- Ferrand-Prevot added to her impressive achievements by winning Paris-Roubaix and the Tour de France Femmes.

In addition to that, Ferrand-Prévot also won the Jeannie Longo award for best French rider whilst Kévin Vauquelin won the award for male French rider of the year. However when it came to the main awards, there wasn't much suspense to it.

Ferrand-Prévot had an iconic solo victory at Paris-Roubaix Femmes right after a podium at the Tour of Flanders that showcased her ability to win at the top level once again, and then at the Tour de France Femmes she took a stellar overall victory, winning the two final mountain stages along the way - the last of which, in the yellow jersey.

Slovenian cycling ace Tadej Pogacar has won the men's Velo d'Or for the third time in his career after claiming a fourth Tour de France title this summer.

The 27-year-old also picked up the Eddy Merckx award for the top classics rider after storming to victory in three of the sport's five one-day 'Monuments' -- the Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy.

Pogacar enjoyed a sensational season with 20 victories in total, including a second world championship.

His goal for 2026 is a record-equalling fifth Tour de France and trying to add the two Monuments missing from his trophy cupboard -- Milan-SanRemo and Paris-Roubaix.
