Lund Andresen Claims Stage 1 and Ochre Jersey as Narváez Narrows GC Gap

Decathlon CMA CGM Team rider Lund Andresen won Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under in Tanunda and captured the ochre race leader’s jersey after taking the stage victory and earning 10 bonus seconds.

The flat opening stage produced meaningful time shifts in a tightly contested general classification, while teammate Jhonatan Narváez picked up valuable seconds in the intermediate sprint to close in on the leaders.

Andresen’s stage triumph followed a strong prologue that positioned him well for the opening road stage. His stage win and the accompanying 10-second time bonus were enough to move him ahead of Sam Watson, who started the day in the ochre jersey. The result reshuffles the standings early in the race, with margins small and every second counting as teams position their leaders for the week ahead.

The stage also featured a key moment for GC ambitions when Jhonatan Narváez crossed the line first at the initial intermediate sprint and collected a 3-second bonus. That move brings Narváez within two seconds of teammate Jay Vine, currently the highest-placed general classification rider for Decathlon CMA CGM Team. Narváez’s gains reflect a low-energy, high-impact tactic — a reminder that small efforts can produce big rewards in a race decided by narrow differences; Narváez himself won the overall classification by nine seconds last year.

Ethan Vernon rode close to the front throughout the day and narrowly missed the podium. Although he was unable to displace the previous leader in the final classification, his presence near the front keeps him in contention for upcoming stages. The team’s balanced showing on day one — a stage win, the ochre jersey, and strategic bonus seconds — gives Decathlon CMA CGM Team multiple options as the race moves into hillier terrain and more selective stages.

“We planned to be active and take opportunities where they came,” said Sports Director Marie-Claude Dupont. “Lund rode a perfect finish to take the win and the jersey, and Jhonatan’s smart move at the sprint shows the squad is thinking ahead. We’ll protect the leaders and stay ready to seize every chance this weekV.
