Polish Cyclists Wisniewska and Szelag Dominate UCI Neusiedlersee Radmathon
In a thrilling display of endurance and skill, Polish riders Martyna Wisniewska and Gracjan Szelag emerged victorious at the UCI Neusiedlersee Radmathon held in the picturesque lakeside community of Morbisch this past weekend
Wisniewska clinched victory in both the 26km time trial and the grueling 125km radmarathon, while Szelag showcased his prowess by winning the men’s radmarathon, solidifying their standings as top competitors in the cycling world.
The weekend kicked off with a fiercely contested 26km time trial on Saturday, where 43-year-old Martyna Wisniewska of the ZAREBSKI TEAM proved her mettle. After finishing second in the UCI Gran Fondo Cyprus Time Trial earlier this year, she returned with a vengeance, clocking an impressive 41:58 to take the top spot on the women’s podium. Following her were Jaqueline Lischka with a time of 43:00 and Jose Smolders at 43:30, marking a competitive field.
Wisniewska’s dominance continued into Sunday’s 125km radmarathon, where she completed the course solo in a blistering 3:14:11. Anna Scherer trailed in at 3:17:23, while Larissa Azmon rounded out the podium in third place, showcasing the depth of talent in the women’s field.
On the men’s side, Gracjan Szelag, a 30-year-old rider from the WALBET TEAM, displayed remarkable speed and endurance, finishing the radmarathon in 2:50:48. His victory was hard-fought, as he outpaced fellow competitors Jeroen Van Voorden and Michiel Kok, who crossed the line just one second later, underscoring the razor-thin margins that often define cycling races.
The men’s time trial saw 37-year-old Martin Geretschnig from Austria take the lead, finishing in a remarkable 35:06, more than a minute ahead of his closest rival, Daniel Szalay, who clocked in at 36:15. Young talent Matthias Jeinal, 24, secured third place with a time of 36:33, indicating a bright future for the sport.
Competitors who finished in the top 25% of their age and gender categories in both the time trial and radmarathon have now qualified for the prestigious 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, scheduled to take place from October 15-18 in Australia. This qualification adds an extra layer of excitement and ambition for the athletes as they set their sights on the international stage.
