Cromwell and O’Brien Claim Victory at UCI SEVEN Gravel
The UCI Gravel racing circuit ignited with excitement this past Saturday as over 3,000 riders descended upon Western Australia for the highly anticipated SEVEN Gravel race
This thrilling event served as a crucial qualifier for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships, scheduled to take place in the Netherlands next October.
In a fierce battle against the clock and their fellow competitors, Australian cyclists Mark O’Brien (TRAPPIST) and Tiffany Cromwell (CANYON-SRAM ZONDACRYPTO) emerged victorious in the grueling 126km race, showcasing their grit and determination on the rugged terrain.
O’Brien, with a blistering time of 4:05:20, showcased his prowess as he crossed the finish line ahead of fellow competitors Mark Chong and Brendon Davids. The competition was fierce, but O’Brien’s strategic pacing and relentless drive secured him the coveted top spot. Notably, 2023 champion Tasman Nankervis, who finished second last week at the Devils Cardigan, put forth a commendable effort, ultimately claiming fourth place.
“It was an incredible race,” said O’Brien. “The conditions were challenging, but the support from the crowd and my team kept me going. Qualifying for the World Championships is an amazing feeling, and I’m looking forward to representing Australia on the international stage.”
In the women’s category, Cromwell delivered a spectacular performance, edging out Cassia Boglio in a nail-biting sprint to the finish. With a time of 4:39:46, Cromwell not only secured her victory but also solidified her position as a formidable contender in the upcoming world championship. Talia Appleton followed closely behind, finishing in third place over a minute later.
“The intensity of the race was palpable,” Cromwell remarked. “I knew it would be a tough fight, especially against such strong competitors. Winning here means everything to me, and I can’t wait for the challenge that awaits in the Netherlands.”
Riders who finished in the top 25% of their respective age and gender categories earned their starting bibs for the World Championships, marking a significant milestone in their cycling careers. The SEVEN Gravel race, alongside the Scottish Gralloch race held concurrently, provided an exhilarating platform for athletes to showcase their skills and determination.
The UCI continues to innovate and expand the gravel racing scene, providing athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest levels. With the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships on the horizon, anticipation is building for what promises to be an unforgettable showcase of talent and endurance.
