Mudslinger Events Unveils Inaugural Bend Dirt Fest

Mudslinger Events, led by renowned endurance event director Mike Ripley, is thrilled to announce the inaugural Bend Dirt Fest, set to take place on Saturday, July 12, 2025 - a Celebration of Trail Running, Gravel Grinding, and Mountain Biking

Mudslinger Events Unveils Inaugural Bend Dirt Fest

This exciting new competition promises a unique blend of trail running, gravel cycling, and mountain biking, all while fostering a strong sense of community and local spirit.

The Bend Dirt Fest emerges as a heartfelt successor to Ripley’s cherished Oregon 24, a 12- and 24-hour mountain bike relay that captivated participants for 15 years. The Oregon 24 attracted up to 500 riders each year and became known for its enchanting atmosphere, where camaraderie flourished under the stars. However, the event faced an abrupt end last year when the Forest Service reclaimed the land it occupied.

"It was like my soul got ripped out," Ripley reflects on the loss of the Oregon 24. "Not only was it my second largest event of the year, but it also embodied a phenomenal feeling of community. My hope is that we can replicate that vibe and culture with the Bend Dirt Fest."

The Bend Dirt Fest is designed to be accessible and inclusive, particularly for Central Oregon residents who often find themselves priced out of larger summer events. To maintain affordability, Ripley has implemented a unique volunteer program where participants can earn a free race entry: for every person who volunteers, a buddy can race at no cost.

This first year’s event is intentionally limited to 100 to 150 participants, divided among the three disciplines: trail running, gravel cycling, and mountain biking. "We didn’t even launch until May," Ripley shares. "So, this is about planting a seed. We know it’ll grow."

The Bend Dirt Fest promises not only a competitive atmosphere but also a celebration of the region's vibrant outdoor culture. Participants can expect scenic routes, challenging terrain, and the opportunity to connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

Ripley emphasizes the importance of community in this new endeavor. "We want to create an event where everyone feels welcome, where they can enjoy the outdoors together, and where the local spirit shines through," he explains.

As the date approaches, Ripley and the Mudslinger Events team are gearing up for a memorable weekend filled with adventure, camaraderie, and, of course, dusty trails.

Three Ways to Get Dirty

The Bend Dirt Fest begins and ends at the Athletic Club of Bend, with parking available nearby at OSU Cascades. The event kicks off at 8 a.m., with participants taking on their choice of the following challenges:

- Trail Run (13.1 miles): The half-marathon route winds its way from the ACB onto Haul Road Trail and then through dusty singletrack before looping back to the finish line at the Club.
- Gravel Grinder (55 miles): A mixed-terrain adventure designed for intermediate to advanced riders. Most riders will complete the ride in 3-5 hours and will cruise back to the ACB for the post-ride celebration.
- Mountain Bike Course (36 miles): This one's a team affair—you'll need to register with one or two teammates. Riders start on pavement before hitting the westside singletrack. The bikers finish the course on the mountain before coasting home to the ACB for a cool beverage and some live music.

All three races include team categories, with prizes awarded by age group, gender, and team configuration. Creative team names are encouraged, whether you go funky or fierce. Age groups start as young as 10 for runners and 14 for bikers, with brackets extending to 70+.

The Bend Dirt Fest is designed not only for competitive racers but also for those who share a passion for the outdoors. “There’s nothing like rolling out of bed in Bend and being able to hang out with your friends on the trail,” said Mudslinger Events founder and race director, Ripley. “While the competitive aspect is definitely there, the concept is about bringing people together to enjoy what they love.”

Ripley, a seasoned race organizer with over 22 years of experience, has transformed Mudslinger Events from a grassroots initiative into a well-respected organization that hosts approximately 15 races annually, supported by a dedicated team of part-time staff and over 700 volunteers. For him, the Bend Dirt Fest is more than just a business venture; it’s a personal passion. “I love being on the trail—running, biking, hiking—and connecting people to each other and to the outdoors,” he added.

Come for the Trails, Stay for the Tunes

The Bend Dirt Fest will feature a variety of events tailored for all skill levels. Participants can choose from a trail run, gravel bike race, or mountain bike race, all culminating in a celebratory finish at the Athletic Club of Bend. Spectators are encouraged to walk or bike to the venue, where the lower lot will be closed off at 8 a.m. to accommodate the festival atmosphere. After completing their timed segments, racers will return for a ceremonial finish, complete with a live DJ and band, creating a festive environment for all attendees.

“This is really a concept event,” Ripley emphasized. “It’s an idea that we hope will flourish. Bend is a great town with great trails and great people. All we’re trying to do is bring them together in a new way.”

Registration for the Bend Dirt Fest is open until July 9, 2025.
