Ben Turner steals stage four sprint win at La Vuelta

Britain’s Ben Turner of Ineos Grenadiers delivered a sensational performance to win stage four of the Vuelta a España, out-sprinting Belgian Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck in a thrilling finish.

The 206.7km stage from Susa, Italy, to Voiron, France, featured challenging climbs and a fast-paced finale. Philipsen appeared poised for victory, expertly led out by teammate Edward Planckaert. Yet, Turner timed his move perfectly on the uphill sprint to seize his first-ever Grand Tour stage win, crossing the line ahead of Philipsen and Planckaert, who finished third.

Turner’s triumph was all the more remarkable considering he was a late addition to the race, called up to replace the ill Lucas Hamilton. The 26-year-old from Britain had only just left the Renewi Tour and was still managing leg issues from the Giro d’Italia. Overcome with emotion after crossing the finish line, Turner said, “I don’t know what to say to be honest, it was a crazy week, super crazy. The team believed in me, and I just gave it my all.”

The stage also saw a strong solo effort from Frenchman Bruno Armirail (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale), who broke away with 32km to go but was caught 15 kilometers from the finish. Gaudu, who won stage three, finished 25th to take the overall lead, narrowly surpassing race favorite Vingegaard on countback as the race heads into Spain.

Stage five promises more excitement with a 24.1km team time trial in Figueres, Spain. As the Vuelta moves forward, all eyes will be on Turner’s breakthrough performance and Gaudu’s quest to hold the coveted red jersey.
