Jay Vine wins stage six as Traeen claims Vuelta lead

Australian cyclist Jay Vine delivered a stunning solo victory in stage six of the Vuelta a Espana, while Norway’s Torstein Traeen claimed the overall race lead after an intense day in the Pyrenees

Vine, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, broke away from a 10-man group with 20 kilometers remaining on the challenging 170.3-kilometer course from Olot, Catalonia to Pal, Andorra. The 29-year-old, who calls Andorra home, secured his third individual Vuelta stage win in spectacular fashion. “The Vuelta wasn’t on my schedule originally, so to be able to win in Andorra in front of my son and wife is unbelievable and incredibly motivating,” said Vine. “I know these roads pretty well. I’m from just down the hill, and La Comella is my favourite climb in all of Andorra.”

Finishing 54 seconds behind Vine, Torstein Traeen of Bahrain Victorious made a significant leap from 26th to first in the general classification standings. The 30-year-old Norwegian, who overcame testicular cancer in 2022, now holds a 31-second lead over France’s Bruno Armirail. Lorenzo Fortunato of XDS Astana rounded out the podium for the day and sits third in the overall rankings following the race’s first summit finish.

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, who started the day wearing the red jersey, slipped to fifth place, trailing Traeen by 2 minutes and 33 seconds. The battle for the Vuelta title continues Friday with another demanding mountain stage, beginning in Andorra la Vella and concluding at Cerler.
