2021 Bike and Beers Series - The Most Fun on Two Wheels!

Deerfield Gravel American Heritage Weekend

July 01 - July 03 2022
Deerfield, Massachusetts

If you have a dedicated gravel, cyclocross, or mountain bike, then join us for this challenging, rewarding midsummer weekend of riding in one of the original birthplaces of the gravel cycling movement. These rolling hills bordering the Connecticut River valley were one of the first American settlement frontiers in the late 1600’s, and these three days of riding include gravel roads, historic homesteads, forest trails, and stunning views across the hills. All lodging, meals, and on-the-road support are included, based out of the quaint but luxurious Deerfield Inn in the center of Historic Deerfield.

Day 1: Sugarloaf-Roaring Brook Loop – Meet the guides at the Deerfield Inn at 12 pm, ready to ride! After setting out from our home base at the Deerfield Inn, today’s ride will introduce you to the Connecticut River valley with a warm-up cruise through the village of South Deerfield and a quick climb to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to enjoy the incredible views. Then it’s west and into the hills to meet the historic scenery that will challenge and impress you. A turn north on seasonal Henhawk Trail takes us through the Conway State Forest before we turn back east past Roaring Brook, Norton Hollow and Whately Glen before heading back north across the flats to review our adventures over dinner and drinks at the Inn.

Day 2: Burkeville to Bardwell’s Ferry – Today we head directly south from the Deerfield Inn before turning west and exploring more stunning hills and hollows as we head toward Conway and the historic Burkeville Covered Bridge. From there we climb Pine Hill Road, then some blessed downhill to the Bear River valley. As we head back toward Deerfield, we’ll take a short out and back detour to explore unpaved Conway Station Road as it winds through the trees along the South River, then a stop at the Bardwell’s Ferry bow bridge where it crosses high above the waters of the Deerfield River. Back up the hill on the north side brings us to the challenging descent on seasonal Hawks Road, the first of two descents you’ll make on this woodsy track this weekend. Then it’s time to cool down on the flats back to Deerfield to explore the village or just enjoy a post-ride drink at the Inn.

Day3: Shelburne and Apex Vistas – On this last ride we’ll head back toward Hawks Road, but instead go north to head up the hill on Old Albany Road towards the highlands. Crossing the Mohawk Trail highway, we head north on Cooper Lane Road to be rewarded with one incredible cross--country view after another. Eventually we turn back south, but there’s more gravel and climbing ahead to a stop at Apex Orchards–so called because you will swear you can see forever from the top of the hill where their farm stand awaits with treats of all kinds. But some for later and stash it in the van! Then it’s back downhill for a caffeine and lunch break at Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters to fuel up for the run back into town and our last descent–another encounter with Hawks Road. But this time you know what’s ahead, so enjoy the thrilling descent through the woods before we get back to Deerfield and says our farewells to this exhilarating riding region.
