Maryland Celebrates Giordana Gran Fondo National Championship Series Finale

The National Championship rounded off a hugely a successful series of nine events across the whole of the U.S., with thousands of cyclists riding the new Gran Fondo format

Maryland Celebrates Giordana Gran Fondo National Championship Series FinaleFrederick, Maryland, Sept 20th 2016 - Hundreds of cyclists lined up for the Gran Fondo national championship in historic Frederick, Maryland for the final opportunity to earn the title of fastest rider in the incredible Gran Fondo format.

Gran Fondo Maryland offered some of the longest timed sections and most challenging terrain of any Gran Fondo in the U.S. The riders with the fastest combined time through each designated section in their category earned their Gran Fondo National Championship Jersey!

Gran Fondo Team Award

7 teams of 4 riders battled it out for the team prize; The Misfits of Belleville, Adventures for the Cure, Underdog Psycholists, Shippenburg University, Bike Doctor / Visit Frederick, Route 1 Velo / Arrow Bicycle and the Bike Lane.

The Misfits of Belleville team consisting of Timothy Rugg, Justin Maunch, Matt McLoone and Kevin Gottlieb took 1st place on the podium ahead of Adventures for the Cure in 2nd and Underdog Psycholists in 3rd place.

Gran Fondo Men’s Categories

The Gran Fondo was a tough 98 miles including around 10,000 feet of climbing and 4 timed climbs of Hamburg Hill, Harp Hill, The Gully of Darius and Gambrill Park.

It was a very good day for the Misfits of Belleville as Timothy Rugg was also the fastest rider of the combined climbs of 1h 6m 34s, an average speed of 21.5 mph. Timothy duly came first in his category M19-34 ahead of his teammates Justin Maunch and Matt McLoone.

In the Collegiate category Ryan Collins took 1st ahead of Scott Coblentz and Benjamin Shrewsbury in 3rd place with a combined time of 1h 12m.
