Megan Guarnier from Boels Dolmans wins uphill sprint on Stage 1 at South Lake Tahoe
Defending champion Megan Guarnier and her Boels Dolmans team took stage one victory at the 2017 Women's AMGEN Tour of California
The first QOM Points went to Kirstabel Doebel-Hickok (Cylance) with Scotti Lechunga (Hagens Berman Supermint) 2nd, Katie Hall (UHC) 3rd after 12 miles into Stage 1 on the 3rd category climb of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe.
Amy Pieters (Boels Dolmans) took the internediate sprint ahead of Arlenis Sierra (Astana) 2nd and Barbara Guarischi 3rd after 22 miles of racing.
Lindsay Bayer from Hagens Berman Supermint was the first to attack and M. Heintz of Visit Dallas DNA and M. Harvey of Illuminate joined Bayer at the front. Alison Tetrick of Cylance attacks the peloton to join the break, but it was short lived and the race came back together.
Ingrid Drexel (Tibco Silicon Valley) and Rushlee Buchanan (UHC) attacked shortly after and built up a lead of two minutes.
The peloton, led by Anna van Der Breggen started to reel the break back and with 27 miles to go it was all back together again.
Lizzie Williams (Hagens Berman Supermint) was the next to attack but was caught on the uncategorized climb after Carson City.
With 10 miles to go, it's going to be an uphill sprint. All the GC favorites were in the front group.
UHC took up the lead with 1 mile to go, and Boels Dolmans launched Amy Pieters off the front on the final climb at an average of 6%.
Katie Hall from UHC followed and attacked, but it was Boels Dolmans who launched Anna Van der Breggen and Megan Guarnier to battle it out in the final sprint.
Megan Guarnier out sprinting team mate Anna Van der Breggen, second and Arlenis Sierra (Astana) 3rd.
