Michigan Mountain Mayhem Spring Classic

Michigan Mountain Mayhem Spring Classic

June 16 2018
Boyne City, Michigan, USA

The Spring Classic is the original MMM and we made it the toughest ride of the series. It is almost always held on the second Saturday of June (the third Saturday) and is limited to 1,500 riders. It is a road bike event and is a timed challenge ride on the toughest terrain Michigan has to offer and will test you both mentally and physically. It is one of the most grueling and challenging rides you will ever participate in.

Nothing compares to the hills of this ride matched up with the early season timing. Four routes to choose from: a 50K teaser, a 100K metric century, a 160K, (100 mile century), and for those who dare… a 200K double metric with almost 10,000 feet of climbing!

The Spring Classic Road rides will take place in beautiful downtown Boyne City.  The Spring Classic is almost always the second Saturday in June. The 2016 event will be held June 18th (the third Saturday). The starts will be at the Boyne City High School (BCHS). Camping will be allowed (outside only) for Friday and Saturday nights and there are shower facilities available for all riders. The finish and after ride party will be held at Peninsula Beach Park. Walking distance from downtown shops and restaurants, and a site offering scenic vistas including a “million dollar sunset”. The parks also offer a playground for children, a beach for swimming and bathrooms.

Who says there are no mountains in Michigan? This unbelievable route starts near the backside of Boyne Mountain, and runs south through the hilliest part of Michigan wrapping aroundSchuss Mountain before returning back to Boyne City. O.K. maybe these hills aren’t the Rockies, but you will wish they were as most of the climbs out west average 3-5% grades. These routes will test anyone with over 50, yes over 50 climbs that hit at least 10% and many that reach 15% – 20%, and even an optional Super Hill that hits 29%!

The Michigan Mountain Mayhem will be one of the most grueling and challenging rides you will ever participate in. There are 4 routes to choose from:  a 50K teaser, a 100K metric century, a 160K (100 mile century), and for those who dare… a 200K double metric!

If you don’t like hills think of it like this, it’s just a mere 128 miles half of which you can casually coast down. Yes, included in this ride are an easy 10,000 feet of descending and all in one day.

Start Times / Itinerary

The MMM is not a race although many people treat it like one.  We know the advantages of a strong peloton, so we will have start waves for those who want them.  You do not have to start in a wave and are free to start anytime between 6:00 am & 9:00 am.  Whichever way you start, your time will start when you cross the start mat.  We are asking the participants to self-select their starting position.  By asking riders to choose where they start, we aim to provide participants a safer and more enjoyable MMM cycling experience.  Please take a look at the criteria for each MMM Start Wave, then make an honest assessment of your abilities/objectives for the event and choose the appropriate corral during the start process.

Wave 1: Racers – Start time @ 7:00 a.m.
Have you finished a MMM event in the top 5% of the overall field?  Do you average 22-25 miles per hour/35-40 kilometers per hour.  Own a racing license?  Train at least 10 hours a week?  Think you can be competitive in your category?  Completely comfortable riding in a fast-moving group?  Not planning on making leisurely aid-station stops?  Registering to race — not just ride?  If the answer to most of these questions is yes, then you belong in Wave 1.

Wave 2: Serious Enthusiasts – Start time @ 7:15 a.m.
Cyclists choosing Wave 2 should also have at least some race or fast-paced group riding experience, but perhaps not enough free time to be a fully dedicated amateur racer.  That means you ride 8-10 hours a week, 18-21 miles per hour/29-34 kilometers per hour, and may be signing up because you want to race against your friends and fellow semi-serious cyclists.

Wave 3: Casual Riders – Start time @ 7:30 a.m.
Wave 3 is for those that ride approximately 3-6 hours a week, 14-17 miles per hour/23-28 kilometers per hour, are comfortable riding around others, and have completed a century, charity ride or maybe some triathlons. If this description resembles your riding, then you’re ready to check out a slightly more competitive cycling atmosphere.  Your MMM plan is to ride reasonably hard all day, but you prefer to stay out of the front-of-the-race fray, and will probably enjoy at least one or two leisurely aid-station stops.
