Denver Food Rescues 3rd Annual Food Rescue Ride

Denver Food Rescue's 3rd Annual Food Rescue Ride

August 31 2019
Aurora, Colorado, USA
The Food Rescue Ride is Denver Food Rescue’s (DFR) biggest fundraising event of the year! All registration fees and fundraising amounts go to DFR’s general operating budget. DFR’s mission is to increase health equity in Denver neighborhoods by increasing access to fresh whole fruits & vegetables. We do this by utilizing edible produce that would otherwise be thrown away from grocery stores, farmers markets, & distributors. We then take the food directly from the food donor to our No Cost Grocery Programs (most of the time on bicycles!).
Our No Cost Grocery Programs are co-created with other community organizations like schools, community centers, and after school programs. This way each program is tailored to the needs of the community! Many have cooking and nutrition classes as well. In 2016 we rescued 328,000 lbs of food and increased healthy food access to 13,000 individuals at our 12 No Cost Grocery Programs. AND we kept 325 tons of CO2 emissions by keeping all those pounds of good food out of the landfill. Plus we biked 18,000 miles saving an additional 8 tons of CO2 emissions. Two birds one seed! Too see a full list of our programming partners and other details about DFR visit our website.  This is Denver Food Rescue’s yearly un-gala. We wanna be out on our bikes while we fundraise and celebrate the successes of DFR and our neighborhood partners! Our rad community is passionate about bikes AND healthy food…for all! Join us for a 15 or 30 mile crusie! Some riders dress as their favorite fruit or veggie, others decorate up a trailer pulling 100 pounds of garden soil for an extra challenge. All of us have a great time together and after the ride we party with lunch, drinks, and prizes. You can take in a dip in the reservoir too!
*The trailer-pull is a challenging ride that takes extra strength and equipment. You must provide your own bicycle trailer to participate in the event. Please note the trailer cannot be more than 64 inches long or 32 inches wide. We will provide you with the 100 pounds (the average weight of rescued food a DFR volunteer pulls) of gardening soil (which will be donated to school gardens in our partnering communities), which you will load onto your trailer at the start of the ride and unload upon finishing the ride. You may not ditch any of the contents of the trailer along the way! You can do the trailer pull for either the 15 mile or 30 mile ride option.
