Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) takes the sprint finish in the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire

The LottoNL-Jumbo rider ,Groenewegen was just ahead of Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge) in a technical sprint finish in the Yorkshire town of Settle. Ewan ran out of space on the twisty road, but came back in the final metres and only just missed out.

In the final intermediate uphill points sprint with 10 km's to in Giggleswick, Frenchman Thomas Voeckler (Direct Energie) went on the attack only to be caught and passed by French compatriot Anthony Turgis (Cofidis). They pushed on with 8 km's to go with a favourable tailwind, but were brought back by the bunch with 3 km's to go. British rider Steve Cummings put in a gutsy attack and held off the peleton until he turned into the headwind with just over 1 km to go and sat up knowing he was to be swalled up by the pack.

Team Sky rider Danny Van Poppel looked strong, but found himself on the front as the final leadout was taken up by Direct Energie. It seems that Bradley Wiggins, who looked frozen all day, climbed off earlier in the race, much to the disappointment of the huge crowd that had gathered in the lovely Yorkshire town of Settle.

Local rider Pete Williams (One Pro Cycling) used his local knowledge and climbing strength to put in a convincing win in the KOM on Côte de Greenhow Hill, a seriously tough climb.

Tomorrow's 2nd stage is favourable for Sprinters, ahead of the very hilly 3rd stage. Groenewegen could defend his Blue Jersey tomorrow.

Luckily the snowed had melted ahead of today's bone chilling stage, that saw the Peleton fight a headwind all day. Proper Yorkshire Moors weather!
