American Kristin Armstrong wins the Olympic women's time trial for the third time in a row

Veteran American Kristin Armstrong, completed a remarkable Olympic cycling hat trick of gold medals, by winning the women's 29.7km time trial in Rio on Wednesday. Just a day before she turns 43, Armstrong added to her gold medals from Beijing, and London to become the first cyclist, to win three Games titles in the same discipline.

American Armstrong beat Olga Zabelinskaya (Russia) into Silver and Anna van der Breggen (Netherlands), who won gold in the women's road race on Sunday, into bronze.

Zabelinskaya, thought she had the gold under lock and key until Armstrong produced a remarkable final surge to complete the victory amid conditions that witnessed several rider almost crash in the gloom of some saturated roads.

After the race, she dropped off her bike and collapsed to the ground, exhausted. Her son was then lifted over the fence and he sprinted into her arms. The two held each other in an embrace, just beyond the finish line, as the cameras flashed.

“It’s super special for my son. He understands what just happened,” she said. “But he did ask me, ‘Momma, why are you crying? You won.’ I said, wow, that’s a great question from a 5-year-old. But I told him, ‘That’s what we do. We cry when we’re happy.’”

The Netherlands' Ellen van Dijk went off road during the women's time trial, but stayed upright and was helped back aboard by her team car. She finished fourth.
